Job Description and Duties

Incumbent will be sourced to the District Bridge Crew. Up to 50% of the time, the incumbent may be assigned work at any location in the District on overnight travel status with the Bridge Crew or to assist other crews in performing work projects. Some statewide travel will be required. Working under the supervision of a Caltrans Bridge Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent operates equipment identified as Category 1 and Category 2 used by assigned unit, types of equipment includes but not limited to: Passenger Vehicles, Mini to 3/4-Ton Pickups, Vans, and 3/4-Ton Utility Bodies;1-Ton and Up trucks including two axle and three axle dump trucks; Construction Equipment: Mowers, Graders, Tractors, Loaders, Excavators, Backhoes, fork lifts; Snow removal specialty equipment: plows, plows with wings and blowers, works individually or with a crew performing tasks related to bridge maintenance. Will involve working safely at heights above water and/or the traveled roadway. Will also perform tasks related to highway maintenance and landscape work and/or snow removal. Class A driver’s license w/Tank endorsement is required.

Working Conditions

Position located at 1403 Furneaux Road, Olivehurst, Yuba County.

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

The scheduling for this crew is 4/10’s year around.

Required to work in a wide range of sometimes extreme conditions, including heat up to 120 degrees, cold to –15 degrees, strong winds, rain, sleet, and snow.

Will be required to work overtime due to storms, emergencies, special work projects, or when the Supervisor deems that it is in the best interest of the State to work overtime.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Must  have knowledge of materials, methods, equipment, and tools used in highway maintenance and construction; provisions of the California Vehicle Code as it pertains to the loading and operation of motor vehicles; and rules and regulations pertaining to highway maintenance practices. Ability to work safely around high-density traffic. Ability to work effectively alone or with others.
