Phlebotomist Sponsorship Program

The Community Wellness Collaborative at the Highlander supports career pathways into healthcare and helps strengthen Nebraska Medicine’s workforce. Through grant funding from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska, we are offering a Phlebotomist Sponsorship Program for individuals ready to take the next step after completing the Workforce Readiness Program.

This program covers the cost of Phlebotomy training through Clarkson College and connects participants to full or part time employment at Nebraska Medicine after successful certification.

Program Requirements: To qualify, you must have completed the five-week Workforce Readiness Program.

The course is a three-month, self-paced program and includes a 3- week, 40-hour externship after coursework is completed. A consistent time commitment is required. Students must be able to meet course and externship schedule expectations to be successful.

What’s Included

Participants accepted into the program receive:

  • Paid tuition and books ($1,899 value)

  • One set of scrubs

  • Ongoing guidance and mentorship from Nebraska Medicine leaders

  • Full or part time employment as a Phlebotomist at Nebraska Medicine following certification. (One Year Commitment Required)

Phlebotomist Job in a Minute

Duties: Phlebotomist

Responsible for collection and transportation of patient specimens for clinical laboratory testing adhering to department identification policies. Perform, evaluate, and report patient specimens using point-of-care instrumentation. Demonstrate behavioral skills that contribute to a productive work environment, represent the lab in a professional manner, and provide excellent customer service. May process and distribute patient specimen for clinical laboratory testing.


Required Qualifications: Phlebotomist

  • Minimum of 18 years of age required.

  • High school education or equivalent required.

  • Effective written and oral communication skills required.

  • Ability to demonstrate initiative, teamwork, and flexibility required.

  • Computer experience required.

  • Attention to detail required.

  • Ability to multitask required.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology required.


    Preferred Qualifications: Phlebotomist

  • Direct patient care experience or completion of a phlebotomy course or phlebotomy experience preferred.

  • Phlebotomy certification PBT (ASCP) preferred
