CARDIO THORACIC OPERATING ROOM RN/PERIOPERATIVE NURSE JOB DESCRIPTION:
Responsibilities
Preoperative Duties:
Review patient charts, medical history, and pre-op requirements.
Verify consent, surgical procedure, and any special equipment or implant needs.
Assess patients physical and emotional readiness for surgery.
Prepare and maintain the sterile surgical environment and required instruments.
Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and surgical techs to ensure readiness.
Intraoperative Duties:
Circulate and/or scrub for cardiothoracic surgical cases (CABG, valve repair/replacement, thoracotomy, lung resection, etc.).
Monitor sterile field, maintain surgical counts, and ensure aseptic technique.
Anticipate the needs of the surgical team during complex cardiac procedures.
Assist with the operation of specialized equipment (e.g., cell saver, hemodynamic monitors).
Administer and document medications and IV fluids as ordered.
Monitor patients vital signs and condition throughout the procedure.
Act as the patient advocate, ensuring safety and compliance with all protocols.
Postoperative Duties:
Coordinate patient handoff to the CVICU or PACU team, communicating all relevant details.
Document intraoperative care, interventions, and patient responses accurately.
Ensure equipment is cleaned, sterilized, and prepared for subsequent cases.
